Elementary, My Dear Watson
Jesus is God. Elementary?! Well of course it should be to believers. However, when I was just a baby believer in the year 2020, very early on after receiving the gift of faith, I was only aware that Jesus is the son of God. I had a lot to learn and thus was a bit overzealous and unknowingly stepped ahead of God’s will for my life. The world was amidst the throes of the pandemic, we were all but confined to our homes, and though I have always been of the opinion that formal education is overrated, I enrolled online to work towards a degree from Liberty University.
One of my assignments was to study John 14:1-12, a passage in which Jesus is comforting his disciples at the Last Supper. In the template outline provided, I was to demonstrate skills of observation, interpretation, correlation, and application. Through this process, light dawned on Marblehead. In the conclusion I wrote, “He declares in no uncertain terms that He indeed and the father are one (God).” I had learned one of the most fundamental truths of the Word. Oh, the providences of God!
Since then, I ended my pursuit of a degree after the first semester, and I’ve read the Bible through a few times. There are many passages confirming that Jesus is God. The Apostle John began his Gospel with, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,” referring to Jesus as the Word. For an explanation as to why Jesus is sometimes referred to as the Word, here is an excellent one.
Although Jesus is not mentioned by name in the Old Testament, there are many verses pointing to Him specifying His deity. One example is Isaiah 40:3, which reads, “A voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” This prophecy was fulfilled by John the Baptist, not to be confused with the Apostle John, in John 1:23, “He (John the Baptist) said, ‘I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness,’ ‘Make straight the way of the Lord (Jesus)’ as the prophet Isaiah said’.” How cool is that?! Side Note: Punctuating that verse was a challenge; I may not have done the quotes correctly.
